Welcome to the Shellfolk.

In the 1930s, Grace was living on Rottnest Island, where she helped her husband run the single classroom school. While there, and later during seaside holidays, she gathered small gifts left behind by the sea. Shells, fragments, and tide worn pieces that most people would step past without noticing.

With a playful sense of humour, remarkable imagination, and patience, she turned these found treasures into a small family of handmade figures. What mattered was character. Each Shellfolk took shape with its own expression, personality, and story.

Until now, the Shellfolk have lived together, held within a single private world. This is the first time they are stepping beyond it.

The Shellfolk world is shaped by belonging, change, grief, curiosity, and care. It values patience, listening, and noticing what is often overlooked.

This space brings the books, the characters, and the wider Shellfolk community together. It is a place to look around, to wander gently, and to stay for a while. Many people find themselves slipping into the Shellfolk world without quite meaning to. That is how Grace lived with them, and how the Shellfolk hope to be met.

The Book
Cover of Shellfolk of the Shore book with handcrafted shell penguin sculpture.

Rune the Penguin (above) is made from a whale’s tooth. His story explores a sense of weight that feels older than he is. Shaped differently from the others, and formed by circumstances he did not choose, Rune wonders what this means for where he belongs.
